Ancient Lights is one of the best new bands I have heard in a long time, and "Reclamation" is a fantastic LP. It is an extremely British LP that is clearly influenced by Crass and Rudimentary Peni (though far less caustic than Rudimentary Peni) as well as many other British bands over the past.... but Ancient Lights creates a sound that is their own. Combining traditional hardcore influences with peace punk influences, melodic punk, and some folk punk moments. Delivered with both aggression and energy, and solidly catchy melodies that tie it all together.
And unapologetically political. Long complicated songs about the issues that plague humanity in the modern world delivered with the occasional dose of snark, that at times reminds me of The Feederz in attitude. Cleverly written and addressing some of the absurd realities of the modern world.
Ancient Lights employees the politics of community and engagement as opposed to the more nihilistic approach of individualism.
As an ancient punk approaching 60, I appreciate the sentiment of "Circled A" as I have witnessed some peers turn to the dark side of right wing conspiracies... where old punks ask moronic questions such as "When did punk become political?" A world where anarchist ideas can be warped into libertarianism by some old punk without any sense of irony.
